Then What? The Darkside of Goals

We are indoctrinated with the idea of not being present. Particularly in the performance domain, all attention is directed toward the future. Milestones and goals litter our environment, even consuming our mentality. We are in such a hurry to be somewhere that we rarely appreciate where we are.

Common examples: Go to school and get good grades so we can get a job, find an idea and build a business so we can make money, or train hard and improve our skill so we can win in performance. Then what? We act as if life is something to be conquered when, in reality, it is meant to be experienced. We are so consumed by end results that we forget entirely about the path. This mentality robs us of bliss and promotes discontent.

Here is the simple reality: Goals are set in the future but achieved in the present. Last I checked, everything happens in the present. A goal provides direction, but that is all it should provide. Because our actions reside in the present, so should our mentality. The moment we step away from “going” and become “being,” we finally live.
